About These Tides

Two very different tidal environments on one map

The Mid-Atlantic coast covers two distinct tidal environments. New York Harbor and New Jersey's coast see semi-diurnal tides of roughly 4–5 feet, with strong currents through the Narrows, Hell Gate, and the Hudson River. Further south, the Chesapeake Bay behaves differently — as a large, mostly enclosed estuary, tidal ranges shrink to 1–3 feet but currents and timing vary widely from mouth to head of bay.

TideSwell shows both on a single interactive map, making it easy to compare conditions across the region without juggling multiple tide tables.

FAQ

Mid-Atlantic tide questions

What are the tides like in New York Harbor?
New York Harbor sees semi-diurnal tides of roughly 4–5 feet, with two high tides and two low tides per day. Currents can be strong through the Narrows and in tidal rivers like the Hudson and East River, making tide timing important for navigation.
What are Chesapeake Bay tides like?
The Chesapeake Bay has relatively small tidal ranges — typically 1–3 feet — because it's a large, partially enclosed estuary. However, tidal timing varies significantly from the mouth of the bay to its upper reaches, and storm surges can amplify water levels significantly.
How many tide stations does TideSwell cover in this region?
TideSwell covers 37 NOAA tide stations across New York, New Jersey, and Virginia's Chesapeake Bay, including New York Harbor, Sandy Hook, Delaware Bay, and multiple Chesapeake stations.
